Why Using Gas Credit Cards isn’t a Great Way to Save Money on Fuel in Georgia

Many Georgia consumers trying to build or rebuild a good credit score use a simple credit card strategy. They pay for one expense with a credit card and charge nothing else during the month. Then, when the bill comes, they pay off the balance completely. This helps them gradually increase their credit scores over time without building debt. Also, because a lot of Georgia residents own and drive cars, gasoline is a popular expense to use in this credit card strategy. So, it stands to reason that, when choosing a credit card to use as a credit score building tool, many Georgia consumers might sign up for gas credit cards.

However, if you do the math, you will likely discover that, as far as rewards cards go, gas credit cards typically don’t have much to offer.

How Other Rewards Credit Cards Offer More Money Saving Opportunities for Georgia Consumers than Gas Credit Cards

Georgia consumers in search of the perfect credit card should, of course, do their research. They should also know that, on average, gas credit cards save users about 5% per gallon on purchased fuel. Yes, that is something, but other credit cards offer much better rewards. Remember that just because a credit card isn’t gas-specific doesn’t mean that you can’t use it to get cash or points for fuel purchases.

Next, gas credit cards usually come with higher-than-average interest rates. In fact, 24.14% is the average APR among the 20 largest major-brand gas credit cards (according to CreditCards.com). This is pretty high when you compare it to the average APR for credit cards in general, which is around 15%. Of course, the interest rate doesn’t matter so much if you pay off your balance every month. Yet, if something happens, and you have to roll a balance over, you want a decent interest rate.

Finally, a lot of Georgia consumers are confused by rewards programs attached to gas credit cards. In its recent analysis of these types of credit cards, researchers from CreditCards.com agreed. They found confusing terminology in user agreements such as “minimum spending thresholds” and “tiered rewards levels.” Analysts from this website concluded that most gas credit cards are archaic and have failed to keep up with the needs of modern consumers.

Another Way for Georgia Consumers to Build or Rebuild Good Credit Scores

Of course, any Georgia consumer who doesn’t qualify for credit cards with better rewards should go with a gas credit card. These cards don’t offer the best savings opportunities, but they can still put a little cash back in your wallet. More importantly, any credit card, if used correctly, can help build or rebuild your credit score.

While in the process of credit repair, Georgia credit card users should regularly check their credit reports. Unfortunately, creditors and the credit bureaus frequently make mistakes when reporting consumer information. Then, these mistakes show up as credit report errors that can unnecessarily bring down credit scores.

Don’t let all of your hard work toward credit score improvement go to waste. Protect your credit score by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com, and requesting free copies of your credit reports from TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. Fortunately, the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) entitles you to do this every 12 months.

Then, while reviewing your credit reports, if you spot credit score damaging inaccuracies, contact Credit Repair Lawyers of America. When you contact our firm, the credit pros here will connect you with an in-house credit repair attorney who will fix your credit issues and get you clean credit reports for FREE. No Georgia consumers should face the dispute process on their own when they can get professional, legal help for absolutely no cost out of pocket.
