How Georgia Consumers Can Dispute Items on their Credit Reports and Win

For all Georgia consumers who are currently trying to improve their credit scores, here’s a big tip: There’s a very good chance that there are errors on your credit reports. In fact, about 80%of consumer credit reports contain errors of some type. By finding and disputing these errors, you can have them removed. For those who have been negatively affected by credit report errors, this is the fastest way to get a better credit score. Of course, in order to dispute items on your credit report and win, you’ll have to follow the correct process.

How to Increase Your Chances of Winning when Disputing Items on Your Credit Reports

There are plenty of reasons why Georgia residents should care about their credit right now. It’s been a slow climb, but the economy is bouncing back. Jobs are opening up, and fewer people are unemployed. This means that a lot of Georgians will be looking to buy a house, purchase a car, or seek higher education. However, all of these things are harder to do with bad credit.

Parts of the credit repair process can take time to accomplish, but fixing credit report errors is something that Georgia consumers can do fairly quickly. That is, of course, if the process is handled correctly. Here are some tips to increase your chances at success.

Don’t file a dispute with the lender.

Yes, it is within your rights to go directly to the lender that is responsible for the inaccurate item(s) on your credit reports. Yet, it is best to start with the credit bureaus. It may seem faster to bypass the credit bureaus, but going through their dispute system is actually the safest route. It protects your rights to fight back if the lender refuses to pull the disputed item from your credit report(s).

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) entitles you to accurate credit reports. This is why the credit bureaus can be sued if they don’t properly investigate consumer disputes. In order for a lawsuit to be filed under the FCRA, though, the credit bureaus have to be involved.

Dispute credit report errors in writing.

The three major credit reporting bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian) offer online dispute forms on their websites. Using these forms to dispute credit report errors may seem convenient, but sending a highly detailed letter is a much better option. These online dispute forms don’t allow enough space for important details to be added, and there’s no way to attach supporting documents. This makes it possible for the credit bureau to deny your claim due to a lack of information. Don’t let that happen.

Instead, you should write a letter that clearly explains why you are filing a dispute. You should also include a copy of the credit report that contains the error(s), with the inaccurate item(s) circled. Make sure to make a copy of the dispute letter itself to have on file if you should need it as evidence later.

Correct mailing addresses for all three major credit bureaus can be found on their websites; TransUnion.com, Experian.com, and Equifax.com.
