Why Pennsylvania Millennials Struggle with Medical Debt

Numerous studies show how Pennsylvania Millennials shy away from credit cards because they don’t want debt. Yet, strangely enough, a new TransUnion study reveals that most Millennials in Pennsylvania (ages 18-34) have unpaid medical debt. Compared to previous generations, Millennials are less likely to pay their medical bills in full. Instead, they pay other bills and let healthcare obligations slide until later – often, much later. Of course, it is too soon to tell whether or not medical debt and medical debt collections will seriously harm Millennial credit scores. However, considering how this generation also struggles with student loan debt, the signs don’t look particularly good.

How Millennials in Pennsylvania Look at Medical Debt Differently than Members of Previous Generations

Luckily, most Pennsylvania Millennials have healthcare coverage. However, after the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was passed in 2010, the country entered the “patient-as-payer” era. This means that most patients in Pennsylvania and other states have higher copays and bigger deductibles. Even with employer-subsidized medical insurance, most consumers pay a lot out of pocket for medical services.

This is the reality that Millennials in Pennsylvania face. Typically, receiving medical care involves building medical debt. Then, because wages are not increasing steadily enough to keep up with escalating living expenses, many Pennsylvania Millennials must prioritize their bills. Unfortunately, medical bills often get paid last in Millennial households. Why? Experts at TransUnion have a theory that the medical billing process is outdated by Millennial standards. They feel that if more online or mobile payment options were available, Millennials might pay medical bills more promptly and avoid long-term medical debt.

How Pennsylvania Millennials Should Deal with Medical Debt Collections and Debt Collectors

If medical bills go unpaid in Pennsylvania, they typically go to medical debt collections. Then, debt collectors start calling. If this happens, Pennsylvania Millennials should understand that, even if they owe money, they still have rights. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), there are certain things that debt collectors cannot legally do when they contact consumers.

For example, debt collection agents may not threaten Pennsylvania consumers with actions they cannot legally take. In addition, debt collectors legally cannot call consumers at all hours or use abusive language with them. If, however, a debt collector does any of these things to you, or makes you feel uncomfortable in any way, you can make them stop.

Also, Pennsylvania Millennials and consumers from every generation don’t have to handle abusive debt collectors on their own. Instead, you can contact Credit Repair Lawyers of America in Pennsylvania, and get an experienced FDCPA lawyer to fight debt collector harassment on your behalf. We’ll put an end to the abuse – legally and for FREE. In addition, some of our clients receive damage payments when we file successful actions against FDCPA violating debt collection agencies.
