According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), about 25% of the 41 million+ U.S. consumers with student loan debt struggle to keep up with payments. Unfortunately, Georgia residents are all-too familiar with this problem. Recent studies indicate that Georgia has the highest amount of debt per student ($30,443) amount the 50 states. With this in mind, it’s clear that a lot of Peach State residents are concerned with sky-high student debt.
Putting off major life events in order to pay debt down, or missing payments and dealing with debt collectors – many Georgia consumers don’t know where to turn for help. Because this type of debt takes a toll on the economy, lawmakers are concerned. No matter how many ideas are batted around, no clear solution to the student debt crisis has emerged.
However, it appears that some indebted Georgia consumers might benefit from student loan forgiveness programs. There are several different types available, and many eligible Georgia consumers don’t know that they qualify for assistance.
Believe it or not, your job may qualify you for some level of student loan forgiveness. In Georgia, those who work for the government or certain non-profit groups can get a portion of their debts forgiven. Other eligible professionals include doctors, nurses, veterinarians, dentists, and teachers who work in low-income schools. This type of student loan forgiveness depends greatly on your student loan source, so check with your lender for your actual eligibility status.
Some cities and states are willing to pay off at least part of your student loans if you agree to move into certain neighborhoods. For example, Niagara Falls, New York pays qualifying college graduates nearly $7,000 to put toward debt if they live in designated areas for at least two years. Kansas, on the other hand, will pay young professionals up to $15,000 to live in one of the state’s many Rural Opportunity Zones.
The is an extreme measure for most Georgia consumers struggling with student loan debt. Yet, if serving in the armed forces is already your goal, enlisting may qualify you for student loan forgiveness. Specifically, both the Army and the Air Force offer programs to certain individuals who sign up and serve for at least three years. Check with a local recruiter for specific requirements and actual incentives.
Recent surveys indicate that many young professionals would rather have a student loan repayment benefit than a 401(k). So, a growing number of employers are starting to respond to their wishes. For example, Fidelity pays $2,000 a year (up to $10,000) toward student loan debt for those employed by the financial firm for at least six months. Young professionals looking for a job in Georgia should ask potential employers whether or not this perk is offered.
Georgia consumers who fall behind in their student loan payments are, more often than not, pursued by debt collectors. Unfortunately, these debt collection agencies sometimes employ abusive tactics, go after the wrong individuals, or demand inaccurate payments.
Luckily, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) protects Georgia residents against debt collector harassment. Therefore, if a debt collector mistreats you or pursues you for a debt that isn’t yours, you can make them stop. Just call Credit Repair Lawyers of America to get an experienced FDCPA attorney on your side who will do whatever it takes to make the abusive debt collector go away – for Free.
