Why Pennsylvania Consumers Should Choose Identity Theft Protection Services Carefully in the Wake of the Equifax Data Breach

According to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, identity theft protection firm, LifeLock is doing quite well in the wake of the Equifax data breach. In fact, a LifeLock representative claimed that enrollments skyrocketed after the breach was announced, and they haven’t slowed down. Of course, LifeLock has downplayed the fact that it primarily gets its information from – you guessed it – Equifax.

Essentially, when Pennsylvania consumers pay for LifeLock services, they get something very similar to what Equifax now offers for free (for a year). Armed with this knowledge, it seems like concerned Pennsylvania residents may as well just sign up with Equifax. However, a lot of consumers have expressed frustration over Equifax’s cumbersome enrollment process. So, where should 143 million Americans with compromised personal data turn for protection against identity theft?

Possible Identity Theft Protection Options for Pennsylvania Consumers Affected by the Equifax Data Breach

Not that it would ever be good, but the massive 2017 Equifax data breach came at a particularly bad time. Statistics indicate that identity theft was at a record high in 2016, and it appears that the threat is even worse now. Approximately HALF of the U.S. population now has data presumably floating around the Dark Web. It’s no wonder that consumers in Pennsylvania and in every other state are in an absolute panic – and signing up for identity theft protection services.

Here are some of the most popular options right now.

Equifax

The credit bureau is offering one year of its TrustedID Premier credit monitoring service to all U.S. residents. Fortunately, Equifax removed the arbitration clause that forced enrolling consumers to give up their rights to sue the company. Be prepared to experience some slow-downs on the Equifax site due to high traffic volumes.

LifeLock

This company offers three different plans, priced, respectively at $10, $20, and $30 a month. Please note that only the $30 plan comes three-bureau credit monitoring. Also, as mentioned above, their credit data comes from Equifax.

IdentityForce

Touted as the “Most Affordable Family Protection,” identity theft protection plans with Identity Theft cost either $12.95 or $19.95 per month. Credit monitoring included with the service involves all three major credit bureaus.

Credit Sesame

The youngest company on this list is only seven years old, but it does offer credit monitoring through all three credit bureaus and four different protection plans. These plans run from $9.95-$19.95 a month. Also, like all identity theft protection services, it includes $1 million of identity insurance (an industry standard).

For Pennsylvania consumers who, in spite of taking precautions, end up as identity theft victims, there is an easy way to handle the credit recovery process. Just call Credit Repair Lawyers of America in Pennsylvania. Fraudulent accounts and bogus transactions on credit reports hurt credit scores.
